The ideal wedding photographer has shot at least 30 weddings. That may seem like an extraordinary amount of experience, but when it comes to this specialty, it isn’t. An experienced wedding photographer has likely also spent time as someone else’s assistant wedding photographer as well.

Creativity and Technical Expertise

A photographer in any specialty needs to be both creative and technically savvy. If you have any friends who are photographers and know the process, they can help you select someone who knows what they are doing by looking at each person’s website portfolio. If not, you can always ask different wedding photographers about their process and equipment.

It is also a good idea to see if they bring assistant wedding photographers, and how many. Most people who are not photographers themselves do not think to ask about this. But having an assistant, or multiple assistants, allows the photographer to obtain shots from different angles at the same time and maybe even get video.

Quality, not Quantity

When choosing a photographer for your wedding, make sure that their package is what you want, and don’t pay too much attention to how many photos it includes. The quality of the photos is more important than how many they take, or how many copies of each one they include. If you are on a strict budget, cut out some of the deals that the photographer includes simply to entice people, in favor of getting fewer photos of good quality than a lot of photos of lesser quality.
